Kragujevac is the forth largest city of Serbia with a population of 180,000, and an area of 835 square kilometers, 140 kilometers away from Belgrade, which is the capital city of Serbia, Kragujevac is the capital of ?umadija District and the largest city in the district. It is located in the center of Serbia, standing on the bank of Lepenica River, which is a branch of Morava River, and the hilly terrain is covered with forest, whose rate reaches one quarter of the whole area. There are three main railways and many roads connecting Kragujevac with outside, which make the transportations convenient.

The history of Kragujevac can be dated bake to 1476, when its name was firstly presented on the record of Ottoman Turks that there were 34 houses in Kragujevac.  From then on, Kragujevac has played an important role, and kept a good record of firsts in the history of Serbia. It was the first modern capital city of Serbia from1818 to1841. The first constitution was passed in 1835, and the first court was founded in 1835, and the first high-school of Serbia was built in 1833, and then the first university was founded in 1838, and in 1835, the first theater was built.  It is also the cradle of modern industry in Serbia. In 1853, the first artillery of Serbia was born in Kragujevac, the first power plant was built here in 1884, and the first electric bulb was also produced here. From the nineteenth century, Kragujevac has cooperated with Remington Company in America in the production of military equipment, hunting and locomotive weapons. Meanwhile, the first newspaper of Serbia was also born here.  Kragujevac has witnessed the prosperity of industry since the 20th Century, which has attracted many immigrants, and contributed to the production of its own motor vehicles in the cooperation with FIAT.

With the development of industry, the Health care and education of Kragujevac have also grown since the latter half of 20th century. The improvement in the medical facility of Kragujevac in the past one hundred years can provide medical service to over 2,000,000 people living in the central part of Serbia.

Kragujevac University in the city includes 11departments with 12,000 students, and many international students are attracted here. The city enjoys beautiful environment and abundant educational resources, which makes it a livable city and a suitable one for investment. Kragujevac is also the hometown of the incumbent president.

The city is rich in tourism resource. The ancient church, which was built in 1818 in the memory of MILOS,the Serbia Prince, is the first Christianity church of modern Serbia. The church is a witness of many historical events, for instance, the declaration of Berlin Agreement, which marked the Serbian independence from the Ottoman Empire. The backyard of the church was the birth place of the first constitution and the national assembly had been hosted here until 1859.

There is a museum in the center of the inner city, whose predecessor is an old casting factory that can be dated back to 1880s, presenting the early stage of the industry in Serbia.

Sumarice Memorial Park is built in the memory of the local people who were massacred by the German Nazis in the WWII. From October 19, 1941 to 21, 3,000 people in the city were killed by Nazi, including 300 teachers and students, which was the notorious massacre in the European battlefield during WWII. There is a memorial sculpture in the park called “Broken Wings”.

Kragujevac also enjoys museums, art galleries, gymnasiums and other cultural and art facilities.

On June 18, 2016, Kragujevac and Xi’an became sister city.  And the present mayor is Radomir Nikoli? .
